LPG Mowers - Cairnsmill Caravan Park Case Study

Situated in St Andrews, on the East Fife coast, Cairnsmill covers 27 acres of countryside and provides facilities for over 170 static caravans with capacity to hold a further 90 touring vans. The site has been a Calor customer for over 20 years, using LPG to heat the swimming pool area, farm house and its static vans.

The size of the park means that simply maintaining the grass is a huge undertaking. John Kirkaldy, site manager, comments: "During the cutting season it’s a never ending job. By the time you’ve finished one cut, you have to start all over again."

The park maintenance team had previously used a diesel powered mower and found re-fuelling inconvenient and time consuming. When the mower had to be re-fuelled, cans of diesel were being carried by hand all over the site, representing a potential environmental hazard. John Kirkaldy says: "Re-fuelling was adding hours to the cutting process, and with new legislation stating a limit of five litres of fuel to be carried at any one time, it was taking far too long."

Environmental concerns had a further impact on Cairnsmill’s decision to re-evaluate its ground care equipment. The emissions produced by the diesel mower

were something the park maintenance team wanted to reduce. "We are in the leisure industry, so diesel spillages and dirty emissions are just not acceptable," says John Kirkaldy.

It was while visiting the caravan and leisure show in Glasgow that Cairnsmill found the ideal solution - a Great Dane LPG-powered ride on mower. The local Great Dane dealer, Henry Sheach, was invited to make an on-site demonstration. The mower was put through its paces and showed exactly the kind of manoeuvrability and performance that Cairnsmill required.

Having run the new mower for a full season, John Kirkaldy says the results have been impressive: "Overall cuting time has been reduced by up to four hours due to beter manoeuvrability and reduced re-fuelling time. Calor LPG provides optimum balance between power and cutting capacity with no noticeable variation in performance. It takes minutes to refuel by simply replacing the Calor cylinder and the risk of spillages is minimised."

Calor’s support doesn’t end with the delivery of the mower and the installation of the tank. The company is working with Cairnsmill to develop and install a centralised LPG storage area where all bulk tanks and cylinders can be contained. Calor supplies LPG for Cairnsmill in both 47kg and 18kg cylinders for the caravans, and also provides an automatic top up service for the bulk tank facility. John Kirkaldy concludes: "Working with the industry leader allows us to develop solutions that have a positive impact on our business."
